REDCAR SEA FRONT

We brought together a team to enter the RIBA International Design Competition to provide a new sea front for Redcar in association with an Environment Agency sea defence scheme. As competition winners we worked with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and the Environment Agency to deliver the scheme.

Our scheme included a significant new building ‘the Redcar Beacon’, a tower structure housing a café and linked to a new arts building on the landward side of the sea front. As part of the development we proposed highway realignments to create an outdoor performance space at the foot of the new building.

The project needed to carefully integrate the movement of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, also allowing for the numerous events that take place on the promenade each year.  The proposals included lighting design to enliven the night time scene; a wave of light ebs and flows along the promenade, manifesting itself via bespoke columns, wave wall uplighters, lighting within new shelters and also within the water feature. A water feature within the promenade provides an additional, lively dimension to the visitor experience.

We carried out extensive stakeholder and community engagement to ensure that the varied needs of stakeholders including fairground operators, shopkeepers, fisherman and the lifeboat were accommodated within the scheme.
