As winners of the RIBA International Design Competition to provide a new sea front for Redcar, Smeeden Foreman lead a team of architects and engineers who worked with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and the Environment Agency to develop and deliver the designs for the project. The scheme included highway realignments, waterplay, cafe, shelters, sculpture, multi- use events space, ‘the Redcar Beacon’ tower, seating areas and an immersive lighting experience. Careful technical design was required to accommodate the coastal conditions and also enable the units to operate year round.
Smeeden Foreman also engaged with the community consultation process as well as with other stakeholders to ensure their interests were accommodated within the scheme. The project was successfully completed in April 2013.
